Featuring Alex Clark from Bon Bon Bon, Carla Martin from the Fine Cacao and Chocolate Institute, Jenny Samaniego from Conexion Chocolate, Jody Hayden from Grocer's Daughter Chocolate and moderated by Emily Case of Zingerman’s Deli .

Zingerman’s is thrilled to present our first ever chocolate panel and we welcome all to attend!

There’s a chocolate revolution underway, and women are at the forefront. This intimate evening will include a moderated discussion with those igniting the industry from Bon Bon Bon, Conexion Chocolate, and Grocer's Daughter, along with a tasting of their chocolates. The event will feature an all-women panel of chocolate professionals spanning the industry’s spectrumーfrom producing, to sourcing, to research. They’ll be speaking and answering your questions about the burgeoning craft chocolate movement and their own efforts to build sustainable business models for farmers, producers, and the environment while making the most delicious chocolate possible. Two of our guests will be chocolatiers hailing from Michigan!

WARNING! This event will contain inspiring language about female empowerment and excessively delicious chocolate for consumption. Audience discretion is advised!

Our guests are:

Carla Martin, PhD, is founder and Executive Director of the Fine Cacao & Chocolate Institute, and a Lecturer in the Department of African and African American Studies at Harvard University. Carla is a social anthropologist whose current research focuses on ethics, quality, and politics in cacao and chocolate and draws on several years of domestic and international ethnographic experience. She received her PhD in African and African American Studies and MA in Social Anthropology from Harvard University.

Alexandra Clark, owner of the innovative business, Bon Bon Bon, which she opened in Hamtramck during the summer of 2014. Her opulent-looking bons are crafted in small batches with high quality and sometimes unusual ingredients, yet they still remain incredibly approachable. The packaging and chocolates have continued to break the bonbon mold ever since opening her doors.

Jody Hayden, chocolatier and co-owner of Grocer's Daughter Chocolate. She and her husband, DC, picked up the reigns from mentor Mimi Wheeler in 2013. The quaint unassuming shop tucked away near Sleeping Bear Dunes, produces some of the best chocolate truffles in the Midwest. From hand rolling truffles to her commitment to ethically sourced chocolate, Jody is meticulous about every step of the chocolate making process. She also co-leads an annual educational cocoa origin tour in Ecuador with Jenny Samenigo.

Jenny Samaniego, owner of Conexion chocolate, is on a mission to create a different kind of business model. When she launched her company in 2016 in Quito, Ecuador, she had a vision to create a true collaboration, not only with the people behind the cultivation of cocoa, but also the chocolatiers using her product, in addition to those wanting to eat delicious chocolate. Inspired by her home country’s traditional tapestry designs, her packaging intentionally boasts her Ecuadorian roots.

We're offering a 20% student & industry discount to give more folks the opportunity to attend. To get the discount, please send us an email to rleber@zingermans.com and we'll follow up with you. We can't wait, hope to see you there!
